All new ultra-compact, lightweight, short stroke,599cc, DOHC,16-valve, liquid-cooled, in-line four-cylinder with lightweight titanium valves.
The cylinder bore has been increased to 67mm (up from 65.5mm) and stroke has been reduced to 42.5mm (from 44.5mm). The cylinder width is almost the same as the 2005 - R6 thanks to Yamaha's special casting technologies and "linerless" cylinder plating.
New cylinder head design features ultra lightweight titanium valves for both intake and exhaust. The valve angles have been steepened for higher compression and improved high rpm performance. The compression ratio is now 12.8:1, while the intake valve angle is 11.5 degrees and the exhaust is 12.25 degrees. The new intake valves are now 27mm ('05 = 25mm) while the exhaust valves are 23mm ('05 = 22mm).
Single intake valve springs reduce weight and "friction" for optimum high rpm performance. The valve retainers are made of lightweight aluminum.
New high flow intake and exhaust ports allow more fuel in and more exhaust out for improved power delivery at all rpms.
Lightweight magnesium head and case covers reduce weight.
New separate cylinder block (the cylinder is no longer part of the upper crankcase) design utilizes ceramic composite plated "sleeveless" cylinder bores. The ceramic coating is sprayed directly on the aluminum block. The benefits are greater heat dissipation for consistent power delivery, reduced frictional power loss and since there are no heavy liners, reduced weight too.
New lightweight forged pistons feature thinner top rings for improved high rpm use. The pistons are secured by new taper type piston pins. Overall the piston and piston combination are lighter than last year for improved response.
New crankcase design since the cylinder is no longer part of the upper case.
New lightweight crankshaft features a decrease in the size of the bearing journal (from 32 to 31mm) while the crank pin diameter is increased by 1mm. The inertial crank mass has been reduced as well for improved throttle response and acceleration. The new crank sits 3mm higher in the cases than "regular" R6S.
