There is now no longer any doubt that the coffee plant originated in Africa. Arabica coffee despite its name, comes from Ethiopia and is still found in wild populations in the undergrowth of the high Abyssinian plateau.
Originally used in a biscuit containing dried fruit mixed with butter called the Abyssinian bun, it was only a little later that users had the idea of enjoying its stimulant properties in an infusion of the roasted and ground beans in boiling water.
Despite some fluctuation, the development of coffee cultivation has been unstoppable in all areas where it is ecologically possible and economically advantageous to grow it.
Why has coffee been so successful. There is no doubt that for the consumer, it produces a beverage with stimulating and mood elevating properties which are so well known that new countries, sometimes traditionally dedicated to tea (Japan and Eastern countries), are now becoming converted to the highly valued bean.
However, for the producers in our country and others, it is also a raw material of great economic and social importance.
In world trade terms, although it is overtaken by cereals in tonnage, in value terms, in commercial dealings, it follows closely after oil.
It is an important earner of strong currencies, contributing in varying degrees to the national income. Nowadays, over 50 percent of Ethiopias export income comes from this crop.
The Arabica species predominates, representing 66 percent or 75 percent of the total, both in terms of production and export, but the Robusta species is playing an increasingly important role in trade, from 25 percent to 30 percent of the total production, encouraged by the popularity of instant coffee where its greater yield per unit area is in its favor.
For Arabica, the following flowering and harvesting times apply:
Northern Latitude: Ethiopia 8N to 36E
Flowering: February to April
Harvesting: October to December
